One year Bob and I travelled to the West Coast on the historic Amtrak Empire Builder, revered descendent of James' Hill's Great Northern Railway.
At night, I propped myself on pillows and tried my best to stay awake, to see what I could see.
Great grain silos crossed my vision often through the darkness. Outlined by the fullness of the moon, these ghostly monolithic monuments to a time more prosperous loomed large before my sleepy eyes. And there was more... much more.
The train rode faster in the night to pick up time, eating up the darkness like a roaring dragon, and that sensation too was worth experiencing.
Dawn began to rise as the Empire Builder slowed and circled in a show of homage to the Great Columbia Gorge. It picked up all the changing colors of a brand new day, glowing like a grand fruit frappe.
When we rolled into King Station in Seattle, I was sleep-deprived but happy. I had seen what no one else aboard had seen, at least among the passengers, who apparently preferred to sleep.
R.A.T.
