The Cleveland Ski Club's Big Creek Ski Area is my neighbor across the road from our home in Concord Township, Ohio. Its lighting provides artificial moonlight for us during winter nights, and though we do not ski, we do love watching all the action on the hill... sometimes from the windows of our library and sometimes while I'm walking in our woodland with my dog.
They have been good neighbors to us; they are part of our life; and I have blogged about this place many times, and talked about it on my Facebook page. Consequently, I've had requests to share specific information about the club.
FROM MY FRIEND LAURA DOBSON, a Big Creek member, I learn that, "You can ski, snowboard or snuggle up to the cozy fire in our chalet at Big Creek Ski Area in Concord Township. We are a member-owned-and-operated ski hil,l and we are inviting you to join us....
"This is a truly family oriented place which has existed for many generations. Our private hill has five trails, including beginner, intermediate, expert and double-black diamond. Lift lines are short and it's always cozy in our chalet. We're a great way to make friends and stay active in Ohio's longest season -- winter...
"Membership benefits include unlimited skiing and snowboarding with no day or time restrictions; special social events such as holiday parties, pancake breakfasts, potluck dinners, wine and cheese parties and our annual Winter Carnival Access...
"Our chalet is available for private parties all year long, for a nominal fee. We have Kids-on-Skis and Learn-to-ski programs and our Junior Race Team, with additional benefits announced as available. Additional membership info is availabke via "Contact Us" on our website, bigcreekski.org, or you can contact Casey O'Neil at 440-336-3834...
"Membership fees start at $175 for students; new single members $280; membership for family of four or more $1,275."
Cleveland Ski Club, a group of more than 250 skiers and snowboarders, dedicates itself to the sport of skiing and snowboarding. Founded in 1937, it is one of the oldest ski clubs in Ohio and one of 24 area ski clubs that are part of the Cleveland Metro Ski Council.
It is the ONLY ski club in Ohio with its own hill, the serene Big Creek Ski Area which was acquired in 1958. The ski club is maintained by moderate membership dues, volunteer assistance, proceeds from club events, and donations.
It opens as early in the season as possible, and skis until the snow is gone! As soon as temps dip below 28F, it feeds its snow guns with a special mixture of SnowMax and enhances the white stuff Mother Nature provides. Trails are machine groomed and kept in shape throughout the skiing season.
The ski hill faces north, so even when it warms up, the snow takes a lot longer to melt. Further, the winter temperatures in the ski hill valley are generally a bit colder than in the surrounding areas.

The club stress safety among its membership, and its ski patrol is on duty whenever the hills are open. They are rigorously trained and dedicated and are certified by national standards. The Cleveland Ski Club has the oldest ski patrol in Ohio.
